Jonathan Matthews#TIL that a "notary public" in the UK (at least) can only notarise documents for use *aboard* ... they can't notarise docs for one to use in the UK. If, for instance, you want to make a certified copy of a document then you have to use someone else's services, such as a solicitor. (A notary can /also/ be a solicitor, of course).
