For instance, my university department depends immensely for its health on us being decent to each other interpersonally. But we could not afford to be there at all were it not for the salaries we are paid. And we also design economic incentives to reward the kinds of work we want to encourage. That can actually improve, not always harm, our interpersonal dynamics.
