I think banning them is the same, in most cases. But it's different in his case, because he's doing "a community" and that's a completely different game from just running a server. If you are just running a server, it does not matter so much, but if you are building a community around your eceleb indie media outlet and running a server with the name of that eceleb indie media outlet, telling the people on that server that you hate them and don't want to acknowledge them is going to hose you. I suspect he has hosed himself beyond just tanking his masto server.
