In Japan, people eat something called osechi ryori for dinner on New Year's Eve. Osechi ryori contains many different types of Japanese food and is made up of food that does not spoil easily.
Also, on New Year's Eve, each TV station broadcasts a special programme (e.g. Kohaku Uta Gassen) are broadcast, which many people watch.
When the New Year is over, a 'yoyo bell' is rung at temples and shrines across the country. Many people will go to bed after hearing it. It is also said that seeing the first sunrise of the year brings good luck, so some people go to see it.
On 1 January, people go to temples and shrines to pay a visit, called Hatsumode. Osechi dishes are made to last for a long time, so they are eaten over the next three days or so.
