The argument for staying on substack seems to be mostly "this is how I make (some of) my living."

It's valid, and it's understandable that you have found yourself unwittingly placed in that position.

That being said, is it your assertion that you intend to stay there and *not* start making plans to both get yourself out of that trap, and also, see to it that you never get stuck in a similar evil corral in the future?

We can get there, together. Folks are working on things. Be willing.
