surprising there's no good and standard tool for showing a progress bar for copying a directory. luckily there is a command that shows a progress bar for a pipe and I just did a tar of the directory to stdout, piped it into the tool, and piped the tool into untar to the other location and now I have a nice directory transfer progress bar and eta.
