a lot of the time folks (including me) say things like “the compiler produces a program that behaves in the same way as the program the user wrote”, which isn’t wrong, but also not great phrasing, because it makes it sound kind of like the tools are lying to the user

and ime when you say stuff like this people’s eyes kinda bug out a little like you’ve let them in on some sort of horrible secret
