One final thought—and I suspect some will hate this.
Desmond writes forcefully about the complexities of American poverty, but he also says that can’t be an excuse for inaction. Affluent and well educated Americans, especially, have a tendency to see all the wrinkles and the what abouts.
But for those who experience it, poverty is very simple
It’s pain.
It’s trauma and shame.
It’s instability.
It’s loss of freedom.
I appreciate that distillation. To me, it’s energizing and clarifying.
