Over on Twitter, some big accounts are promoting a conspiracy theory whereby I repudiated my concerns from the 2010s about gain of function (GoF) research and argued that a lab origin of Covid was impossible, in exchange for federal funding.

It’s a pretty compelling theory, marred only by the facts that Covid increased my opposition to GoF research, I’ve always argued that we can’t rule out a lab leak, and I haven’t received federal funding for disease research in well over a decade.
