@ieure @aphyr older gnome versions let you swap out the WM and still use the rest of the infra tools but unfortunately that hasn't worked for like a decade

but I think xfce might still let you do that? worth looking into anyway

my kids use gnome on debian and it seems nice if you don't mind using the mouse a lot (I do mind)
