They're useful and fun, but they also hold a ton of information about us and our social networks. If it falls into the hands of someone who wants to hurt you and your friends, your smartphone can become very dangerous. During the wave of arrests targeting Palestine solidarity activists in Toronto this past week, police have been going to great lengths to get ahold of people's phones. And what they've found in those phones has helped them criminalize more people. This is a scary situation, but we aren't powerless.</a></label><br><a href="https://kolektiva.social/system/media_attachments/files/111/495/853/843/218/696/original/b1d38121383045bd.png" rel="external">https://kolektiva.social/system/media_attachments/files/111/495/853/843/218/696/original/b1d38121383045bd.png</a></li><li><label><a rel="external" href="https://gnusocial.jp/attachment/1899569">1) Encrypt your phoneEncryption means the data on your device is coded so that it can't be read without decoding it with a key. Encryption for iPhones is turned on automatically if you put in a passphrase, and for Android phones you can turn it on in security settings. If your phone isn't encrypted, anyone who has your phone can see your content by copying it to a computer even if they don't know your passphrase.2) Use a strong passphraseBecause encryption hides your data behind a passphrase, encryption is only useful if you have a strong passphrase. A good passphrase has a mix of numbers and letters and should be as long as you can convince yourself to use. Consider making a password of five or more random words plus a number. Do not use the swipey unlock feature and do not use a passcode that's all numbers -- they are easy to break. I know it is inconvenient to have to type a bunch of characters each time you want to look at your phone, but it is even more inconvenient to have the contents of your phone used to lock up people you care about.Fingerprint or facial recognition are not good enough for securing your phone, because police are allowed to force you to unlock them and they can sometimes be bypassed. I know it is inconvenient to have a long passcode that you have to put in a hundred times a day. But it is even more inconvenient to have all your messages and photos read by police.</a></label><br><a href="https://kolektiva.social/system/media_attachments/files/111/495/854/022/910/245/original/c55877e90ef04f09.png" rel="external">https://kolektiva.social/system/media_attachments/files/111/495/854/022/910/245/original/c55877e90ef04f09.png</a></li><li><label><a rel="external" href="https://gnusocial.jp/attachment/1899570">3) Turn your phone off when you're not using itEncryption is only in place before you enter your password for the first time after turning on your phone. It is then unencrypted and only protected by a lock screen. A lock screen is just a privacy guard that stops someone from picking up your phone and using it but does not prevent files from being copied to a computer. If your phone is captured while it is turned on and decrypted, your data is as available as if the phone was not encrypted at all. This means it is a good idea to leave your phone turned off whenever you can. Many of the people arrested this week were targeted with early morning house raids, which means it is a good idea to leave your phone turned off over night. Go ahead and order yourself an alarm clock. As well, it is easy to stop people while they are traveling -- consider turning your phone off before leaving the house.Some phones have a setting that allows you to schedule times when the phone will power off -- on Android, it is likely in system settings or power settings. Others even let you make the phone restart after a certain amount of time. Settings like these can help keep your data safe because restarting your phone enables the encryption.4) Use encrypted messaging appsHaving your phone encrypted is important, but if all your messages are being sent by SMS, email, or on services that don't respect your privacy (like Facebook Messenger), police can still get access to your messages.</a></label><br><a href="https://kolektiva.social/system/media_attachments/files/111/495/854/179/864/697/original/32b2926d68a68dcc.png" rel="external">https://kolektiva.social/system/media_attachments/files/111/495/854/179/864/697/original/32b2926d68a68dcc.png</a></li></ol></footer></blockquote>
