Edwin Hubble's discovery, that the Andromeda "nebula" is actually another island galaxy far outside our own Milky Way, is 1st published in The New York Times #OTD in 1924.
He identified extragalactic Cepheid variable stars for the 1st time on astronomical photos of Andromeda by using the 100-inch Hooker telescope. His measurement demonstrated conclusively that the distance of the Great Andromeda Nebula was an entirely separate galaxy located a significant distance from the Milky Way. #astronomy
