I haven't kept count, but encountered dozens over the years, and probaly countless other attempts. Success factors of Fediverse likely the open protocol, federation, and a handful of FOSS apps simultaneously iterating on them. A win for openness and free software (until now.. hope mainstreaming and corporate entries will not spoil it).
