In English, if you check "Preferences" -> "Appearance" -> "Disable swiping motions", then your timeline doesn't go away from where you are everytime new items arrive on your timeline. If this is not checked, when you click "(show) new items" you are forced to see the last post, moving you away from the toot you were seeing.
