I've come to realize a lot of friction between Linux users and the GNOME project comes from a misunderstanding of what GNOME is about.
GNOME designs for simplicity by removing as many useful features as possible. For example, in the latest version, only the 'g' key on your keyboard will work. This makes typing accessible to everyone.
Yes it's challenging and compromises are made but the developers truly know best.
If you don't like it, become a developer. Then you will know best, too.
