Because they're all trying to stick to the top of the political compass and you can't get there without cops and basically every president since FDR has been trying to shove the dot higher up the authoritarianism scale, zero exceptions, even Trump bitched out on this one.

The Libertarian Party is run by RINOs. The democrats are basically authoritarian center or authoritarian left. The republicans are authoritarian center or authoritarian left. Any meaningful distinction is absent, you get to pick whether the secret police call you "citizen" or "comrade".

It's always been a dirty business that attracted dirty people, but it's worse.
