metropolitan region with its >4 million people, ground water levels are falling at alarming rates.
What erosion does can be seen only a few meters higher, when there is no protection by trees.
The sandy ground is only covered by a few cm of fertile ground. A few dry years in a row could change the landscape forever.
The only way to provide the region with enough fresh water would probably be a gigantic desalination plant at the Baltic sea (200km to the North) and and a huge pipeline.
