@evan I’m not sure why, but this reminded me of the grove at Yad V’Shem. At Yad V’shem, there is a carob grove in dedication to the righteous among the nations. The reason it is a carob grove is that the carob tree takes 70 years to fruit, so those who plant a carob tree do so entirely selflessly because they will never enjoy its fruit. They plant the tree for those that will come after them.
That’s why it is at Yad V’shem. The righteous among the nations that risked their lives to save Jews during the Shoah never saw the true fruit of their risk.
So I’d suggest planting a tree under the shade of which you will never sit is not just doing it right, but doing it the most right because you’re doing it truly selflessly.
