I had a lot of well-meaning friends try to teach me good stage presence. They would say 'talk louder in the middle' and 'project to the back of the crowd' and 'be high energy'. I didn't learn stage presence like that.
I learned stage presence when another friend put a boot in my back, pushing me forward about four feet toward the audience. 'Stand here', she said. 'And be you. You're awesome'.
So I did.
