@Tom I read the first book as an adult, and spent the entire book going, incredulously, "ARE THERE NO MANDATED REPORTERS AT HOGWARTS?! WERE THERE NO MANDATED REPORTERS AT HIS PREVIOUS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL?!"

Edit to add: I mean. Isn't that the whole point of setting fantasy stories into distant past? Into some presumed savage time when child abuse and neglect were so unremarkable as to be plausible?

That is not the '80s. I promise. I lived through the '80s. We knew that locking children in closets was illegal back then. We had mandated reporters and everything.
