Because they wanted to show the Indians what they are going up against in the international job market. Before going any further, India is the land of diploma mills, false credentials, and academic cheating is rampant. Don't expect high intelligence coming from an Indian engineer or doctor.
Anyway, the three of us smoked the Indians to the point that in the class ranking we occupied the top three class positions. We had Indian engineers in there w/ several engineer degrees who not only couldn't calculate how temperature, pressure, and density changed with atmospheric altitude, but couldn't conceptually understand it. Moreover, they couldn't understand how the weight of an airplane changes the friction force between the tire and the airstrip. There's more I can go on about, but these are concepts that are taught in Freshman year.
I wish the school well in changing Indian academic culture in the hopes that Indians can learn to understand these scientific concepts. But they have an uphill battle.
