btw I was living 2h drive away from parents at age 16, I'm part of the rare amount of people that knew how to cook and stuff at like age ~14.
And I'm a 90's kid, sending letters is something we did for like birthday parties (mostly for fun, but also because some friends were in different schools but just the next town over or simply other side of town/city).
