Sir Martin of the WesternDowns@Sophistifunk yeah the older pumps didn't always deliver consistent pressure or have fancy sensors to control flow . Designed to give more, so needed an 'overflow' of sorts. Without it, vapor locks, high temps leading to irregular combustion become issues.
