I'm not an ideologue about ‘APIs should always be free' — I understand the need for viable business models and the value inherent in enormous data sets.
That said, the value of network effects and standard-setting, of being *the best and or easiest place* to do certain kinds of things, is important, too. And Twitter's shift to a punitively expensive API burnt a decade of that to the ground, instantly. It's impressive.
