if you're worried about needing the number I'd recommend getting it ported to a cheap VOIP provider like Callcentric.com and then you can have it auto-forward to your new number and later turn off SMS/send directly to voicemail (email you an mp3!) just so you don't lose access to it if you have anything important that needs it...

like account recovery, financial things, etc that get tied to a phone number
