The consequences 10, 20 years out were certainly not what Bin Laden hoped for. Bin Laden had some kind of notion that US invasions would lead to the toppling of the Saudi government or…something. Like all militant utopians, his plans were doomed from the outset.

However, the immediate effects of the attacks — the US invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq — were exactly as desired. Long term failure for OBL, yes, but hard to argue the 9/11 attacks didn’t succeed for him.
