My experience with a person in crisis last night leads me to re-affirm the conclusion: There is no situation that cops do not simply make worse.
Not an exaggeration. Not hyperbole. COPS ALWAYS MAKE IT WORSE.
Let's just say, for the sake of argument, (because I've never personally experienced this), there's some situation out there that cops tend to handle well. In that case, cops STILL make things worse by perpetuating the belief among the masses that "the police are here, they have it under control, I don't have to do anything."
And that belief is why, over half an hour of a person obviously being in crisis in a busy street last night, in a large liberal city, only me and one other person stopped to help without being paid to do so.
