Thunderbolt is just USB plus more features now. The Thunderbolt capabilities can't work at all if the cable is counterfeit.

I'm unclear on how much Apple controls the tech because it started at Intel but TB3 and 4 were a joint venture, but this is a case where I trust Apple and Intel's legal dept to keep fraudulent products off the market. It's a silly idea of mine but has worked well for me so far.
