@feld I understand paying more money, the problem is figuring out what cable supports what.

Even modern computers won't tell you, hey, idiot, something between your computer and your device isn't usb 3 compatible, might want to change it. And w/ how much smarts are required for each component in the chain, it wouldn't actually be that hard to have added the ability to pinpoint the "broken" component.
