Regular CDs are pressed and last forever, but CD-Rs use ink that when hit with a laser creates a bubble and they use that to create pits where the bubble isn't. Apparently the ink decays or something. I have disks from maybe 15 years ago that are dead. Supposedly DVD-Rs are rated for like 30 years.
