Until last week, I'd always liked the metaphor for reading with a vivid imagination.

The wind howled as the snow storm raged. The phones were out, the roads were closed, and smart-phones didn't exist yet. I huddled in my room, fire-axe in hand.

I'd already read this one, so I'd locked the slasher in the basement but now I had no idea what could happen.
