@Zealist This is just my take, but much like we consciously try to reject our sinful nature, a name change represents a rejection of Simeom's, Saul's etc previous life. In every case I can think of, these new names are given directly by God. It also prefigures Revelation 2:17 and 3:12 where God gives each of us new names.
