As she approached Meryton, Mary noticed the absolute lack of activity in the streets.

Entering the market square, all she found were sandbags piled around weaponry, and soldiers looking entirely bored out of their minds. There were none of the usual women flirting, trying to elicit reactions from the soldiers, convincing them to take a moment to steal a kiss.
