I think that near-age relationships are the modern aberration and that older men with younger women was probably much more common in the past. Near-age relationships are common because the alternative for most people is singledom. You either meet a peer in highschool or college or you're alone forever. Besides, an established man will naturally be more attractive to women, so it makes sense that younger women will prefer older men when they're placing bets on the future, which is what women do when they select a man.
