here's an infodump:
basically US MREs (the not 24 hour pack but rather, one full meal at ~1250 kcal) assume you sweat a lot (which you will in the army), so the ultra salty food tastes normal, or even under-salted sometimes. so they stick a fuckload of minerals of all sorts in the main meal courses. Eating that stuff cold feels really good, warmed up it feels great IF you are very-active for prolonged times (ie, hiking a mountain for 10 hours a day)
Right now i had to dilute the US MRE chilli and beans (227 grams) with 3 smaller tomatoes (something like 300-350 grams), cause of how intense it was.
24 hour rations are a bit different though, while ive never had US 24 hour rations, i've had french, german and estonian 24 hour rations, they're quite more palletable and home-y so to say in its contents, though everything is ever so slightly saltier than you would make at home casually. which, is fine, as it's necessary. of the meals i've seen, french shit is some REAL gourmet shit in a can, but really requires you to actually cook for real to make it well edible. german stuff is "bohnen unt rätschel-fleisch".
tldr; "kinda"
my non estonian MRE experiences are limited to like 4xfrench 24 hour rations, 4x german 24hour rations, and something like 30 US MREs, some of which have overlapped, multiple times. there hasnt been an US standard MRE that i have not enjoyed almost every part of, except for that one red candy (twizzlers?), fuck that candy, literally beeswax with no flavour.
