I was speaking mainly of Baptism of water, because, in so far as I know, no one else believes in the spiritual gifts on fedi (or at least such things net me zero interaction xD).
But, when Luther speaks of "Trusting in your Baptism" I am pretty sure he was talking about water.
Regarding communions, the Trad churches, insist you ignore your sense of taste and smell, which tell you, you are not drinking blood nor chewing flesh. And, saying that they are "spiritually" present, is slightly better, because you aren't having to gas light yourself about the sensory feedback you are receiving. But, you are affirming that something is happening, that can neither be seen or felt.
If we consider "spiritually present", the only thing anyone can truthfully affirm is that, they believe something is happening, they have no idea what it actually is, and it is happening even though there is no external nor internal evidence. An earnest testimony of nonsense is still nonsense.
And, all that, stands against it, even before we dig into the fact that, a metaphor can never become truth of the thing it describes. It is only true, when it represents the limited relationship it has with the original thing.
Jesus went through an ordeal to provide for us. The bread breaking is like His body being broken, eating the broken bread is like us receiving what He has done for us. But, this bread is not the thing it describes, it has no power. And, yet, the world partakes of it unworthily, thinking the bread has Christ present in it, they eat and drink damnation into their bodies. (the Greek is clear that it is not ultimate damnation)
... I am willing to accept that, sometimes the truth is unacceptable, so, I wont say any more on the topic. I honestly don't know how to present this matter more clearly, and I can only fight, if I engage in repetition of points xD
Both of you are my brothers in Christ, and we are going to Heaven.
