The amdgpu driver is proprietary - half of it is in Linux under MIT expat, the other half is inside the most proprietary of software binaries under a disgusting proprietary software license that needs to be loaded onto the card.
@Narbray Old intel integrated works the best.
The driver for old thinkpads that can be GNUbooted is fully free.
For somewhat never ones, it seems everything is provided by the UEFI, so the Linux driver doesn't need load up any more proprietary software.
For the newest ones, it seems that proprietary peripheral software needs to be loaded up.
As for Noveau, the driver 700 series and below is fully free, as Nouveau has free peripheral software for those cards.
The fastest card you can get is the 780 Ti, although reclocking isn't complete (the card uses only 50% of rated power and certain things strangely don't perform as well as hoped), so there still a few bugs, but nouveau just keeps on improving.
