lots of new fedifolk are joining from twitter, so lemme just be annoying :3

this network/platform is called the fediverse, sometimes shortened to fedi, not mastodon or masto

mastodon is but one of the many pieces of server software that contribute to the fediverse. others include akkoma, calckey, misskey, pleroma, pixelfed, and more. you’ll probably see some other people using those

people work really really hard on all of this software, so putting it all under the umbrella of ”mastodon” can be seen as disrespectful to developers :(

also, the twitter-ism of calling the platform an ”app” or ”website” doesn’t really fly here since fedi is a network of servers, not one single service controlled by one entity

it’s pedanticism, sure, but the culture and etiquette here is really specific and i’m mostly just trying to help people fit in. lots of fedifolk generally look down on people who refer to fedi as ”mastodon”
