tl;dr normies lack spacial reasoning

People are bad at visualizing unmirrored images of themselves. People pretty instinctively know how mirrors work. A camera that acts as a mirror is intuitive. A self-facing camera that's not mirrored messes with the average person's head, and is harder to use.
If it helps, pretty much every phone has a photo editing function that allows you to mirror your picture manually to get an unmirrored photo.
