And what's copying about? -- Well, on some occasions a region of memory is (logically) copied from one place (and address space) to another.
One such case is when you send out-of-line memory in a Mach message (which is what happens all the time on the I/O path) -- the receiver gets a copy of what was in the sender's address space. Another case is an explicit vm_copy call.
