It's up to the client to do this, you would have to ask the client's developer to implement a "more" button. As you say, the web interface does do this, but there's no way of building this into the post itself.

Another approach if you do regular long posts is to set up a Fediverse blog. WordPress has an official plugin which lets people follow indepedently hosted WordPress blogs from the Fediverse:
