The USSR, for example, was very clear that their economy was state capitalism, some revoultunaires felt that the economy woudl need to go through a stage of state capitalism in order to arrive at socialism. Eventually the authoritarians made it clear that once they had power, they had no intention of ever giving it up, little different from the Czars of old.
