"Heirloom" varieties are often hardier. Roses make a good example: There are old garden rose varieties that will happily grow feral & conquer a hedge or a yard boundary, in super crappy soil. (I can attest this from painful experience.) Hell, wild roses in New England thrive as a weed in ocean-side rocks!
Meanwhile rose varieties bred to exacting display requirements often require delicate care & pampering to prosper.
