In my reporting experience, #Indigenous leaders tend to be careful and measured with their words. It's NDN culture to speak plainly and accurately, not sensationalizing with emotion or exaggeration. But also, tribal leaders are in a tough spot---if they criticize state or federal government agencies, legislators, even justifiably and accurately, that can come back and harm the community if the colonial leaders retaliate.
Which makes these remarks all the more startling.
