Pirates (in general) tend to have almost zero overlap with customers and outside of certain scenes where piracy for sport was valorized (I remember the Amiga and Atari ST being infamous for this), material losses from pirating games don't amount to anything substantial compared to the additional exposure and word of mouth the game gets. Also, thanks to services like Steam and GOG.com, piracy is almost 100% a solved problem on PC as unless you're flat broke or a paranoid there's no reason to pirate media over just buying it and using it from those services. They have high trustworthiness and have deservedly earned thousands of dollars of my cash over the span of 10 odd years since I started using them.
