No they exists forever. Yes imho they should be not implemented because they lead to false assumptions. The way better solution is to define such stuff in your Profile Page.
If you think like that, have you already contributed your opinion to the "show me only follower stuff" flag what mastodon implemented and now leads to unnecessary admin bothering? Anyone who knows a bunch of protocols immediately can see a bunch of issues from similiar protocols like smtp and mail bouncing...
Yes im in the opinion to leave the protocol as it is because its simpler, it fulfills its purpose & it doesnt lead to false assumptions.
