Charlie Stross@otfrom @LillyHerself @erlend The Irish presidency is like those of a lot of former British colonies/dominions that ditch the British monarchy—it fills roughly the same constitutional hole (until local legislative divergence takes over). 6-12 months probably isn't long enough for training in protocol, though: remember the not-insignificant diplomatic duties involved.
