Every farmer has to be an amateur mechanic, chemist, veterinarian, botanist, etc. Most of them have a side gig or two because there's not much to do when you're waiting for plants to grow or hogs to fatten up. Every farmer I've ever known has been well above average in work ethic, strength, wits etc. And then they end up living a super long time if the chemicals don't get them, since most of them stay physically active and don't "retire" in the traditional sense.
