my main question about this 8-bit byte thing right now is -- everyone says that's it's good to have a byte size that's a power of 2. That sounds very plausible, but why exactly is it important to use a power of 2?

(obviously it's not 100% _necessary_ -- there have been computers in the past that used byte sizes that weren’t a power of 2)
