@ianhecht Yes, I think that's part of it.
I also think that some of the trade-offs of being online are more positive for marginalized communities than for majority communities.
Eg., If you feel like you're the only gay kid in a rural Idaho town, being online can be life saving. Yes, it can also expose you to online bullying. But I would expect the sum "decrease in happiness" of being online for gay kids, to be less than for straight kids. Because humans need community to be happy.
